Tonight I was working away and saw a tweet by Sarah Evans about collectively building a list of the “The 10 Commandments of Social Media.” I thought it was a pretty fun idea, so I joined in the #10comm chat on Twitter. Here are the ones I submitted. Please share yours or let me know if you disagree with me. They are not in any particular order.

1. Thou shalt not spam, be self-promoty or salesy.10-2-commandments

2. Thou shalt help thy neighbor/community by being a resource and retweeting great content.

3. Thou shalt not send auto-DMs to new followers telling them to check out a website or your blog.

4. Thou shalt build your community organically by following back and offering original relevant content.

5. Thou shalt not build your community through false pretenses, auto-follows or pump-and-dumping.

6. Thou shalt not make wrongful use of social media or misuse it for selfish/personal gain.

7. Thou shalt not bear false witness in social media or be a troll.

8. Thou shalt not falsely claim or self-proclaim to be a social media expert, guru, swami or thought-leader.

9. Thou shalt listen and think before you tweet, blog, comment or post to facebook.

10. Thou shalt always remember that social media is about we and not me.

Thanks for starting the conversation Sarah. This was fun.
