Is Hot Potato Hip Again?

April 5th, 2010 | By Mike Wisniewski | Posted In: General

We all remember the game we played as children, but Hot Potato has evolved. Now, Hot Potato is a social networking site built around helping friends and fans socialize and share experiences around live events by creating a public or private chat room. The application can be filtered by location, social graph or “presence” at an event

I know what you’re thinking…another social networking site? But Hot Potato has some great potential from tradeshows, parties, sporting events, to viewing parties for shows like “Lost” or the Oscars. The settings are totally customizable, so you can view comments from just your friends or everyone at the event.  Hot Potato has even started to pre-populate interesting events on their website.

Hot Potato can be used to discuss events, engage friends or attendees in conversations, share thoughts, or photos and videos. It can be used to discuss the event and ask questions before it happens, and share thoughts and photos afterward.

And the application continues to make itself more user friendly, through a series of updates and an iPhone app. You can find and participate in events while on the go. Additionally, the service plays nice with other social media, including Foursquare, Facebook and Twitter.  You can pull in your friends by scanning your social networking sites. The latest update allows users to use hashtags from Hot Potato to Twitter making your event easier to find and automatically check-in on Foursquare when attending events.

Hot Potato users now have their own calendars. Like any calendar function, you can add events, but your friends can add you to other events as well. Also, in the most recent updates, events also now feature start times. Now, when you create an event and add friends they will get a notification reminding them to participate.

Are you on board or do you think you have enough social networking sites in your life?
