Meshin: the personal assistant for your inbox

October 19th, 2010 | By Sara Meaney | Posted In: General, Videos

Funded by Xerox and hailing from the technology incubator at PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), @Meshin is a semantic Outlook plugin that connects all pieces of related information together – so you don’t have to hunt for it.

Think about it. How many emails, documents, contacts, data points do you receive from people in a day? Hundreds? Thousands? And days later, how hard is it to recreate and collect all data points and touchpoints related to a single conversation or topic thread when you need it urgently?

Enter Meshin. Imagine being able to connect all related pieces of information in your inbox without needing to search. It all comes to you, enabling you to access the history of a conversation thread with ease.

I had an opportunity to sit and chat with Chris Holmes (@yorkshireguyUS), CEO of Meshin, and Kristen Galliani (@kgalliani), VP Marketing. They shared the story of how Meshin came to be, what it can do for people and what semantic search means for the future of the web. Have a look.

Borne out of the fact that people are busy and are being pulled in ever-increasing directions throughout the day/week/month, Meshin uses semantic search technology to result in a more intuitive search functionality.

Good news is that it has entered a public beta phase recently, and you can download the platform and try it for yourself.

Bad news is that it is only available for Outlook at this time. (As a Mac/iCal user, I have to give that a sad face emoticon.) But down the road it will be available for all platforms. Stay tuned.

The future potential for this type of semantic search technology is huge. It could change the way we search for and store information forever. The future of search will continue to move in the direction of semantic technology, especially as search needs to become more social. Social media will also likely need to evolve to incorporate more sophisticated search functionality in order to continually adapt to changing user expectations.

How do you see this technology playing out for you, personally? Would it change how you work for the better?

I’ve been using Xobni for over a year now and it saves me a ton of time when searching for contacts, links, attachments and past conversations.
It’s also one of the only Outlook plugins I’ve ever used that didn’t completely cripple Outlook.

Perhaps a great blog post for Meshin would be a comparison of their features to Xobni and several of the other Outlook plugins that provide enhanced search. I would be interested to know how they differ.
    Cheers!

Hey Andy, Thanks for the comment. That’s a great idea for a comparison post. Now that Meshin is in public beta, it would be great to get comments from users of both and others to see where they shake out. Meshin’s position is that their platform is driven by semantics/natural language processing and that as a result it is unique in its intuitive search and relevance connections. Would love to hear your thoughts on it, if you get a chance to try it.
