I’ve been keenly interested in Cirque du Soleil for the last five years or so. After spending two years as a national brand manager at Funjet Vacations, focusing primarily on their Las Vegas business, I had several occasions to attend Cirque shows in Las Vegas. I left each show amazed at the athleticism and power of the performers and the unique form of storytelling.
Another reason why I was interested in Cirque was because of a book I read a few years ago called, Blue Ocean Strategy. In short it’s a book about making competition irrelevant in your industry by creating your own market or reinventing how business is done. This is an idea that appeals to me greatly in business.
Cirque is a case study in that book. It discusses how the company took the idea of a circus and stripped away all the less-than-practical stuff (like animals) and focused on what people really liked. Artistic and mind-numbing human performances. Cirque created their own category and has virtually no competition. Amazing.
Because of this interest and the fact that Jess is very kind, we are very much looking forward to the discussion tomorrow.
Here’s a little bit more about Jess courtesy of her LinkedIn profile – Jessica Berlin is currently the Social Media Manager for the Resident Shows Division of Cirque du Soleil based in Las Vegas. Cirque du Soleil currently has seven Resident Shows, seven in Las Vegas and one in Orlando. As Social Media Manager she is responsible for planning social media marketing campaigns, developing and distributing content as well as coordinating blogger outreach. Prior to being in Social Media, Jessica was a Publicist for all of the Resident Shows. Her current role enables her to merge her public relations experience with marketing to create engaging campaigns meant to build on the existing community of Cirque du Soleil fans.
